Straits Chinese Kamcheng Pot & Cover - Late 19th Century

Straits Chinese Kamcheng Pot & Cover - Late 19th Century

This Chinese porcelain pot & lid was made in China to the tastes of Straits Chinese (Peranakan, Baba, or Nonya) in the late 19th century. This style of pot is called a kamcheng, meaning 'covered vessel' in Hokkien.

It's not entirely clear what kamchengs were made for but they were likely used for food storage. Kamchengs were often commissioned as part of a wedding service. This pot has some historic chips on the lid which can be seen in the photos. It has evidence of use and age which is reflected in the price.

The straits style decorative motifs are a blend of styles featuring Indian scrolling & blooms and a crouching Chinese foo dog. The framed windows depict birds.
