This dramatic antique Chinese black lacquer cabinet dates to the 19th century & Qing dynasty. It is provincial in style and originally from Shanxi. It is made from Northern elm (yumu).
Lacquer cabinets were often given as wedding gifts, usually in pairs. The lacquer is a resin made from the sap of the Rhus verniciflua tree. Lacquer has a long history in Chinese furniture and has been used for over 2000 years. Black, burgundy & red were the primary lacquers used in traditional Chinese furniture. Other colours such as green, blue, yellow and pink were not used and are only found in modern reproductions.
The interior of this piece is separated by a shelf and two drawers.
