Painted Teak Chest From Nagaur - 19thC

Painted Teak Chest From Nagaur - 19thC

This painted chest is from Nagaur, Northern India. Nagaur is one of the four Rajput schools in the area known as Marwar and is well-reputed for its beautiful style of painting. Chests and boxes from India are found in an extraordinary variety of styles reflecting the many cultures that influenced India and were usually made from teak, rosewood, or jackfruit wood. They were used for storing valuables such as textiles, jewelry and cash.

The trunk has been painstakingly restored in our Wiltshire workshops. Historic repairs such as a small iron patch on the lid add charm and character.
