Dark Green Leather Camphor Trunk - Early 19th Century

Dark Green Leather Camphor Trunk - Early 19th Century

This very decorative painted leather on camphor wood trunk dates from the early part of the 19th century.  As was usual for the period, the leather is stained dark green, almost black and edged and studded with brass. It was made for the English & American export market in Canton, China and the design is classical Georgian in style with studded swag, typical of the period. Camphor wood was used as a natural moth repellent to protect clothing.

It is likely this chest was made by Ashoe, a well-known furniture maker found in Carpenters Square, Canton. For a similar example see plate 94 in The Decorative Arts of The China Trade by Crossman.

This Chinese leather trunk is a useful size and would be suitable either at the end of a bed or for a coffee table.
