Old Tan Leather Trunk From Shanghai - 19thC

Old Tan Leather Trunk From Shanghai - 19thC

These antique leather chests from Shanghai are an excellent example of the beauty of simple traditional Chinese design. Each is in excellent condition considering they're over 150 years old. More recently, black lacquer stands have been added to make them usable as coffee tables.

The double ruyi brass locks are unsual to find with most chests having a single brass hasp. Chests were important in Chinese culture as they had very few cupboards for storage.
