Mulberry & Poplar Cabinet From Gansu - 19th Century

Mulberry & Poplar Cabinet From Gansu - 19th Century

This original Chinese cabinet dates to the 19th century and originates from Gansu province in north western China, a region known for producing robust, practical furniture using locally available timbers. Constructed from mulberry and poplar, the cabinet displays a strong, well-balanced form, softened by decades of use and natural ageing.

The exterior retains its original brass hardware and has developed a deep, richly layered patina that enhances the character of the wood. The restrained design is typical of regional domestic furniture, where durability and function were prioritised over overt decoration.

Behind the double doors, the interior is fitted with a single shelf, providing useful storage, while two drawers beneath add further practicality. As with many pieces from this region, the cabinet remains highly functional today and works equally well in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
