
Elm Side Cabinet From Shanxi - 19th Century
This graceful antique Chinese side cabinet is from Shanxi in Northern China & dates to the Qing dynasty (1644€“1911) and the 19th century. This style of cabinet is often called a round-corner cabinet and the style was first seen in the Ming dynasty. This style of cabinet was a staple in Shanxi province and would have been used both for storage of scrolls & clothes.
The cabinet is constructed from northern elm wood (榆木 yumu) and would have been lacquered with a burgundy lacquer of which the remains can be seen in parts on the wood. This piece offers a large interior space separated by a single shelf. Over time it has developed a wonderful rich patina.
