Japanese Choba Dansu - Taisho Era

This Japanese choba dansu (or cho dansu) merchant chest dates from the Taishō Era (1912 - 1926) and isĀ made in the Osaka style. Cho dansu were used by merchants in shops for storing ledgers, money, and seals. Osaka & Kyoto were the centers of production for unconventional tansu like this one.Ā

This tansu is constructed with mēpuru (maple wood / acer amoenum) door & drawer fronts with a sugi (cryptomeria) frame. The drawers inside the lockbox are kiri (paulownia). The maple wood features a beautiful circular burl figuring called tamamoku in Japan.Ā Some of the drawer fronts are quartersawn creating a striped pattern.Ā

Ā

The recessed drawer pulls featured on this chest reached high popularity in the Taisho era as they mimicked those seen on British campaign furniture.Ā As with most Japanese furniture, the carpentry is excellent and although it is lightweight, it is extremely well-made. It has very functional sliding doors & drawers. All the fittings are original to the piece.
