English Chinoiserie Black Lacquer Papiermache Plate - Late 18thC

English Chinoiserie Black Lacquer Papiermache Plate - Late 18thC

Chinoiserie was all the rage in the early 19th century. Gilt black lacquer Chinese exportware was made for wealthy members of the British Georgian upper class in the Qing dynasty. Some artists began to copy this style and bring production to England. Some plates such as this one were produced in London and whilst intricate and detailed work, it was never quite as good as the original work done in China and showed western influences. This papier-mâché plate is one such example of a piece made in England in the late 18th century.

These pieces are a fragile piece of history and are usually found damaged. This plate has been checked over in our workshop and small restorations made to stop the aging process.
