Elm Side Table From Shanxi - 19th Century

Elm Side Table From Shanxi - 19th Century

These antique Chinese waisted side tablesĀ were made inĀ pairs. These particular side tables date from the 19th century Qing dynasty and originally came from Shanxi Province. Each is sold separately.

Ā

This waisted design became prevalent in the Ming dynasty and in Shanxi the design remained unchanged until the modern day.Ā Originally these would have been used as stools and would have been coated in a dark lacquer, however, over time, this has mostly worn away on the table top to reveal a beautiful northern elm (yumu) grain.
