Chinese Red Elm Tapered Cabinet - Qing Dynasty
This antique Chinese taper cabinet dates to the 18th century, Qing dynasty (1644-1911). The style is often known as a round-corner cabinet (yuanjiaogui) and was first seen in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). The pink lacquer found on the interior of the cabinet points to this being an early piece - 18th century. It is made from red elm (jumu) in the Suzhou style. The interior consists of three shelves, the middle of which has two attached drawers.
Cabinets like his one would originally be used as book cabinets by scholars and later, the style became more commonly used for the storage of clothes.
