This Chinese flower stand dates from the late 19th century. This style of table was often used for elevating incense which would burn in the center of a room. Constructed from red elm (jumu) the step style seen here was introduced to Suzhou furniture in the 18th century. The carving and wood are typical for pieces from Suzhou province.Ā
