This wonderful pair of Chinese export reverse glass paintings of Chinese courtesans are framed in modern gilt frames. Beautifully painted and produced in Canton in the late 18th century. These paintings were skillfully painted on the reverse side of the glass. These are incredibly fragile remnants of the past.Ā

As exoticism took hold during the mid 18th century, there was a high demand in Georgian England for paintings of native Chinese figures & landscapes. These were predominantly painted in Canton, a hub for trade with The West where Chinese export furniture was also produced.Ā

Note the right painting has a small crack in the glass with historic repairs visible in the photographs.Ā
