Carved Teak Votive Panel From Andhra Pradesh - Late 19th Century

Carved Teak Votive Panel From Andhra Pradesh - Late 19th Century

This late 19th century carved teak votive panel originates from Andhra Pradesh in South India and was traditionally made by tribal artisans to adorn the walls of village huts and small domestic shrines. These panels were created as symbolic devotional objects, often representing sacred architectural forms connected to local deities and spiritual protection within the home.

Hand-carved from solid teak wood, this example features a beautifully naïve geometric composition centred around a recessed shrine-like opening. The panel is divided into architectural sections decorated with floral motifs, lattice carving and stepped forms, all softened by decades of age and use. Traces of the original red and white pigment remain within the carvings, adding warmth and authenticity to the piece and highlighting its folk-art character.

Its sculptural quality and simple architectural form make it an attractive decorative wall piece, whether displayed individually or grouped alongside similar tribal carvings. Supplied fitted with a hanger and ready to display.
