Brass Bound Teak Military Chest From Burma - 19th Century

Brass Bound Teak Military Chest From Burma - 19th Century

This antique brass bound Anglo-Burmese military chest dates to the 19th century and isĀ decorated with brass inlaid wire work classically indicative of Burmese artistry.Ā This piece is a fine example of an Anglo-Burmese military chest and the perfect size for a coffee table.

This style of military chest is always etched with brass wire and is constructed from beautifully patinated teak with its original brass fittings and handles. The interior consists of one large space, with two separate candle boxes with carved lids. One of the candle boxes has a sliding false bottom that can be moved to reveal a secret compartmentĀ  There is an exterior drawer in the front and the top is made from a single piece of teak wood.Ā

Military chests were used by officers of the British Indian Army to carry their kit and personal possessions whilst on tour, they were made to order and had to withstand a lot of punishment in transit.Ā
