Blue & White Porcelain Fish Bowl Planter - Dragon

Blue & White Porcelain Fish Bowl Planter - Dragon

This reproduction Chinese blue & white porcelain fishbowl is hand painted and made in the classic Qing style (1644-1911). The painting depicts two five claw dragons chasing a flaming pearl amidst ruyi clouds over crashing waves. The scene is framed at the top by ruyi shaped lappets below a running dog motif with stylised lion handles.

Chinese dragons are a symbol of power, strength, and good luck. The Emperors of China used the dragon as a symbol of their imperial power and strength.

Bowls like these are perfect for a garden or interior planter or for planting up with waterlilies. Traditionally these bowls were originally used to keep fish in (usually koi carp). Today, they are far more likely to be used as planters and are made in small batches by hand. Most potters have learned their craft from the elders of their family and these skills have been handed down through the generations.Ā

Porcelain is steeped in centuries of Chinese culture and history. Blue and white porcelain is glazed using a transparent porcelain glaze dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907).Ā
