Painted Box From Shekhawati - Early 19th Century

This early 19th-century painted box from Shekhawati in northern Rajasthan is now a rare thing to find and a beautifully preserved example of traditional Rajasthani craftsmanship. Made from teak and decorated with its original deep red and ochre polychrome, the box features scrolling floral motifs characteristic of the Shekhawati region. The paint has worn naturally over time, creating a richly textured surface with wonderful patination.

The box is reinforced with hand-beaten iron hinges and strapping, giving it both strength and a striking rustic aesthetic. Inside, it retains its original compartment, once used to organise valuables. Boxes like this were traditionally used to store the family dowry—cash, jewellery, and other precious possessions—making them central objects within the household.

A functional and decorative piece, it serves beautifully today as an accent chest or storage box with genuine historical character.
