Painted Teak Almirah Cabinet With Carved Panels - Early 19th Century

Painted Teak Almirah Cabinet With Carved Panels - Early 19th Century

This exquisite antique almirah cabinet is a bold and dramatic statement piece. Featuring vivid pinks, yellows and mint green tones. This is a real interior decorator piece.

Intricately carved with floral designs, this cabinet dates to the early 19th century. While Indian cabinets were often built within walls, this freestanding piece stands out in its brightly painted teak wood construction. Its compact size sets it apart from larger Gujarati cabinets.

This painted teak almirah cabinet features stunning floral designs on the door panels and intricate patterns along the borders, in place of the traditional carved sunburst panels seen in other almirah cabinets. The interior has been painted a deep blue and has three sturdy shelves. Two drawers at the base offer additional storage.

Almirah cabinets are influenced by Portuguese design. The core Portuguese occupation did not expand beyond Southern India, however, these cabinets can be found in Gujarat further north, showing how trade and styles transcended regional borders.
