Indian Horse Head Corbel On Stand - 19th Century
These striking 19th-century teak horse head corbels originates from Andhra Pradesh and were originally part of either side of a doorway - an entranceway to a wealthy merchant haveli. The horses are rendered with a strong, expressive form, its raised head, carved bridle and incised surface decoration giving the piece a sense of movement and vitality. Deeply worn areas, weathered grain and old surface losses bear witness to its architectural past and long life in situ.
Now mounted on a simple iron stand, the corbel is presented as a sculptural object, allowing the quality of the carving and the character of the aged teak to be fully appreciated. These horse head corbels are sold individually, though they display exceptionally well as a mirrored pair, making a powerful statement on a console, pedestal or within a larger interior scheme.
